Note: My most recent policy work focuses on abortion rights because we are in crisis in this country and I have academic and policy expertise in reproductive health and rights. I worked for the ACLU on reproductive and women’s rights in the DC Legislative Office and at the NOW Legal Defense and Education Fund (now called Legal Momentum, in New York) on sexual harassment, sexual assault, and abortion rights.  At the ACLU I advised affiliates on how to defeat anti-abortion legislation in state legislatures. I also wrote policy papers to educate affiliates and partners on innumerable reproductive justice issues, from parental consent/notification to Catholic hospitals and their policies on reproductive health. At NOW Legal Defense I conducted research for a RICO case against violent anti-abortion organizations that were organizing across state lines to assassinate physicians and health care workers; I worked with attorneys who helped draft and pass the Violence Against Women Act with Joe Biden’s office and the Freedom of Access to Clinic Entrances Act in 1994, and on efforts to extend criminal and civil statutes of limitations for child sexual abuse.

Susan L. Ostermann and I have written ten editorials related to reproductive justice (one with Tricia C. Bruce, one with Anna Calasanti), that make various arguments, including: forced pregnancy/childbirth is violence against women and sexual abuse, exacerbates inequalities, makes pregnancy less safe for all, is ineffective and counterproductive policy based on research and data, and is incompatible with integral human development. All of these editorials are in bold below.
